Team Nautilus Does It!
This merry band of intrepid adventurers has become the first team to ever virtually row the Viking Rows Atlantic Challenge. It took the team of 11 a year and three months to complete the task, but that’s just because the team did not eat and sleep on their rowing machines!
The total amount of actual rowing time it took the team to row from La Gomera, Spain, to Antigua (in the Lesser Antilles) was:
24 days, 13 hours, 27 minutes and 42 seconds.
According to my reading of the Ocean Rowing Society statistics, the fastest ever REAL rowing crossing of this route was set at the beginning of the year by Spanish Team, Ocean Cats, a team of four, who reached Antigua after 31 days, 18 hours, and 9 minutes. We’ll see if that record still holds in 2024 (see below).
Rowing machines may not float, but they also are not subject to currents and eddies on the ‘Big Briny’…
Well done, Team Nautilus, on virtually rowing the Atlantic Challenge on Viking Rows! Maybe we can row it for real one day?!?!?
Pete Beatty At Sea
Speaking of rowing the Atlantic for real, UK Roofer, Pete Beatty, is now rowing a boat Cindy and I once attempted to row from Scituate, MA, to Dingle, Ireland. Pete Beatty, however, is rowing from Portugal to French Guiana. He’s been at sea for about 9 days now; you can track his progress here.
We wish Pete Fair Winds (and currents)!!
World’s Toughest Row
There’s even more Ocean Rowing Racing taking place out on the ‘Big Briny’ right now. The “World’s Toughest Row” Ocean Rowing Race from La Gomera to to Antigua runs every December. There are even several American teams in this year’s race.
Watch the ‘action’ live here.
Happy Viking Holidays!
And with that, Hanukkah 2023 is but a memory and Christmas is right around the corner, as are many other 2023 Holiday festivities. We wish you the best of them all and hope to see you on the erg and the water in 2024!
Mele Kalikimaka!
Here’s a nice Viking Christmas song from Phil Rey Gibbons:
